I took a firearms course.... what do I do next?

After your course, you should receive an envelope in the mail from the FSESO. This typically takes 4-6 weeks, but in some cases may take a bit longer.   This envelope will contain copies of a course report that proves you have completed the course and passed the exams. Use one of these copies in you application for your firearms licence. Applications are accessed online through the RCMP at the following link: https://rcmp.ca/en/firearms/apply-firearms-licence

Tips:

  • If you don’t receive your course report forms within 2 months, contact the FSESO. You can contact the FSESO by: Emailing info@fseso.org or calling 1877 322-2345 x101 You will need your instructor’s full name and exact course date.
  • If you’re between 12 and 18 years old, you can contact the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program to apply for a minor’s license.  https://rcmp.ca/en/firearms/apply-firearms-licence
  • Processing times for Firearms Licence applications depend on several factors, including your background, the province, and the RCMP’s customer service capacity.
  • If you have any questions about your application, you can call the RCMP at 1-800-731-4000.

I took the Hunter Education Course, what do I do next?

After successfully completing the Ontario Hunter Education Course you will receive a Certificate. Take the certificate to a Service Ontario office that processes Hunting Licences and the staff will help you get your hunting licence. This can be done after the course with no waiting period.

How do I pay for my course?

Secure payment can be made on this website by credit card or e-transfer.  If you would like to pay by cash or check, please contact us to make arrangements. Please note: your spot will only be reserved once your payment is received.

How long is the course?

All of our courses are normally completed in 1 day*.

*PLEASE NOTE: The Canadian Firearms Safety Course is completed in one VERY LONG day! The CFSC is 9.5 hours of course time; this does not include breaks or testing. Testing normally finished well into the evening! There is a written and practical test for each student.

We do courses in a one-day format because of student requests. We used to do them over multiple days, but students typically prefer a 1 day format. We do our best to take enough breaks and make the course as interesting and active as possible.

The Ontario Hunter Education Course is 8 hours of course time plus a 50 question multiple choice test.

The Restricted Firearms Course is 7 hours of course time, plus a written and practical test.

Are your instructors Certified

Yes! All our instructors are licenced and certified for the courses they teach. We are also fully insured.

Is your payment site secure?

Yes! We understand how important it is to keep personal information secure. Payments are processed through PayPal which has a long track record of processing payments securely.

How do I know what courses I need to take?

If you would like to own/use shotguns and rifles you must successfully complete the Canadian Firearms Safety Course

If you also want to hunt in Ontario, you must also complete the Ontario Hunter Education Course

If you would like to be licenced to own/use handguns (and other restricted firearms) you must successfully complete the 1. Canadian Firearms Safety Course AND  2. Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course

How old do I have to be to attend the courses?

To attend the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and Ontario Hunter Education Course, you must be 12 years old +. After successfully completing the course those 12-17 years old can apply for a Firearms Minor’s Permit.

To attend the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course, you must be 18 years old +.

What is the success rate?

We have an excellent success rate! If you work hard during every section of the course, there is a very good chance of success. Our instructors will do everything they can to ensure you are comfortable with the information and skills needed to be a safe and legal firearms owner and user—and pass the tests! If you do fail one of the exams there can be opportunity to retest provided you worked hard during all sections of the course. There is an additional fee for retesting.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

If you need to reschedule with more than 10 days notice prior to the course, we will do our best to move you to another course, with no additional charge. If you need to reschedule with in 10 days of the course date, there may be an administration fee for each spot that is rescheduled. If you need to reschedule, your payment will be good for the calendar year in which you registered for the original course. There is no guarantee we can reschedule as many of our courses are fully booked far in advance. We understand that scheduling can be difficult and we will always do our best to accommodate your needs.

If you do not show up for your course, the fee will not be refunded.
